Nach 1918 spielte Prag eine bedeutende Rolle als Zentrum der Kunst nicht nur in der Tschechoslowakei, sondern war im Begriff, zu einem der wichtigsten kulturellen Zentren Europas zu werden. Die Voraussetzungen dafür waren günstig: Die Stadt lag immer schon am Schnittpunkt mehrerer Kulturen, der neue Staat brauchte eine eigene kulturelle Identität, die junge heimische Kunstszene emanzipierte sich von ihren mitteleuropäischen Wurzeln und orientierte sich mehr nach Westen.

This article addresses the question of why, despite being a significant art metropolis, Prague plays a comparatively marginal role in global art history. By analysing the complex factors underlying the development of a modern yet consistently multicultural art metropolis around 1900, the reasons why Cubist and Surrealist art from the Czech Republic receives relatively little attention will be demonstrated.

The tree is omnipresent in cultural history because it is an extremely effective carrier of human content. The material aspect and economic use of the tree, as well as its spiritual, aesthetic and ecological functions, are of fundamental importance to society.
